In a significant aviation breakthrough, Virgin Atlantic has successfully operated the first commercial airliner entirely powered by sustainable jet fuel.
The Boeing 787, named “Flight100,” embarked on a historic journey from London’s Heathrow Airport to New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport on November 28.
The Composition of the Sustainable Fuel
This landmark flight utilized “Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF),” which is composed of 88 percent hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids from waste fats and 12 percent synthetic aromatic kerosene derived from plant sugars.
SAF is acclaimed for reducing CO2 lifecycle emissions by up to 70 percent while matching the performance of traditional jet fuel.
