Newly disclosed documents have shed light on a series of emails between President Joe Biden and one of his son Hunter Biden’s business associates.
These revelations have reignited controversy surrounding the President’s involvement in his son’s business affairs.
The Use of an Alias
The document exposes President Biden, before his presidency, communicating with Eric Schwerin, a long-time business partner of Hunter Biden, using an alias in his emails.
According to the document, 54 emails were exchanged between President Biden and Eric Schwerin from January 6, 2014, to February 2, 2015.
These emails have been revealed in an email log released by the U.S. House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee.
Timing and Implications
Notably, only five of these emails were exchanged before President Biden’s visit to Ukraine in June 2014.
This visit gained notoriety for President Biden’s pressure on Ukraine to dismiss its top prosecutor, Viktor Shokin, who was investigating Burisma Holdings, a company with which Hunter Biden had associations. The pressure ultimately led to Shokin’s ousting.
The Use of Private Email Accounts
The emails unveiled that President Biden used various email addresses, including one with the alias robinware456@, to communicate outside official channels.
Furthermore, President Biden and Mr. Schwerin were copied on several hundred additional emails, including 38 from White House email accounts.
Republican Reaction and Calls for Transparency
Reacting to the revelations, Rep. Jason Smith (R-Mo.), Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, voiced concerns about the timing of these emails and their implications.
He called for transparency, stating that “evidence from today’s documents show right around the time of international trips like those to Ukraine, Joe Biden was emailing his son and his son’s business partner from private email accounts using aliases while Vice President.”
Eric Schwerin’s Role in Financial Matters
The emails also shed light on Eric Schwerin’s role in managing financial matters for both President Biden and Hunter Biden.
Messages from Hunter Biden’s laptop computer indicated Mr. Schwerin’s involvement in discussions about President Biden’s mortgage. He was described as “a close confidant and counsel” by the President.
Multiple Visits to the White House
Previously disclosed records revealed that Eric Schwerin had visited the White House and the Naval Observatory numerous times while President Biden was Vice President, raising questions about his involvement in matters related to the Biden family.
The emails were part of a more significant tranche of materials released by the Ways and Means Committee, provided by IRS whistleblowers Gary Shapley and Joseph Zeigler, who had been working on an investigation into potential crimes, including tax evasion, related to Mr. Biden.
Ongoing Investigation and Legal Battles
The emails have become central to investigations by House Republicans into the Biden family’s business dealings, primarily during President Biden’s tenure as Vice President during the Obama administration.
Several organizations, including America First Legal, are pursuing these emails through legal channels. The National Archives and Records Administration has identified a substantial volume of emails across the accounts used by President Biden.
Potential Political Ramifications
The controversy surrounding the emails could have political repercussions, as they fuel discussions about whether President Biden’s actions constituted an abuse of public office for personal gain.
Additional Document on Tax Issues
In a related development, another document released this week revealed concerns raised by a lawyer, Kevin Morris, who messaged Mr. Biden’s team in early 2020 regarding unpaid taxes, posing “considerable risk personally and politically.”
President Biden was charged this year with intentional tax evasion, although the charges were later dropped to pursue them in another venue following a failed plea deal.
The newly disclosed emails between President Biden and his son’s business associate have rekindled controversy and investigations, with questions about the timing, transparency, and potential implications for the President’s involvement in his son’s business affairs.
